Good reading comes your way right in your e-mail from THE DAILY GOSPEL. These Good Folk daily send you the Feast of the Day, the Gospel of the Day, and a brief “sermon” about that gospel that may have been written by Pope Benedict XVI, or by an early Father of the Church. To subscribe, go to www.dailygospel.org. Do it. It’s good for your faith, your heart, and your soul! Every Sunday you will find good reading —-Sunday’s readings—- on the YELLOW SHEETS that are available, RIGHT NEXT TO THE PARISH BULLETIN, on the information table in the church vestibule. Take them BOTH, and read carefully. Guaranteed, you’ll learn SOMETHING! Calendars, with religious and patriotic holidays listed, are available in the vestibule of the church.

Parishioners needing contribution receipts for tax purposes should contact Maureen at OLMC...@YAHOO.COM, or call her at 718-384-0223. Have your Envelopes number handy!

Sunday, January 13, the exact day of the murderous massacre, The Brooklyn-Queens Lithuanian American Community Chapter and Annunciation Parish commemorated “Defenders of Freedom Day”. Those killed at the Vilnius TV Tower were memorialized at Mass. A program followed Mass in the parish Lower Hall. Father Volertas delivered an invocation, New York Consul General Valdemaras Sarapinas shared his thoughts about the tragedy, and several Maironis School students recited selected poems of Jonas Marcinkevicius. Chapter Past president, Vida Jankauskas, noting that the “revolutions” in the Baltic States were often referred to as “Singing Revolutions”, led the singing of several Lithuanian songs, The event ended with all singing Lietuva brangi. Thanks go to Rasa and Gediminas Sprindys, Vida and Algis Jankauskas, Ramute and Richardas Hopamas, Tracey and Raimundas Slizys, Josephina Senken, Arunas Tirksliunas, and Pat Sidas.

APOLOGIES to the NY Lithuanian Athletic Club and its president, Jonas Jankauskas. Last month ZINIOS erroneously listed January 25 in the calendar for the Club’s Annual Meeting. Atsiprasau!

Sick call list: Elvira Vilineskis, Phyllis Macenas, Liuda Gudelis, Joe Levonas, and Anele Steponis are suffering the assaults of age. Karolis Dvorak is seriously ill. Antanas Vytuvis, , Regina Gelzinis, also need prayers, as does Helen Bagdonas, who is undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

She’s a GIRL! Rosie Regina Saib is the daughter of parishioners Courtney and Darius Saib.

More good news: We got a letter from Bishop Di Marzio! He sends us a BIG thank you for our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Thirty-two parishioners donated a total of $6,355! Since that sum is well above our quota of $3,611.00, $2,694 will come BACK to Annunciation!

Lots of good news about our beloved church: Maintenance and repair work, long put off due to the diocesan moratorium, is now starting. The project, begun several years ago by Joe Rudis, to restore and refurbish the doors, will finally be completed. The sound system will be replaced! The gutters are to be cleaned and repaired where necessary, and the Sanctuary rug will be replaced.

Because Annunciation parishioners are generous, there are monies to help defray these costs. Remember, though, that maintenance is a never ending project, and there will be times when the parish will have to ask us all for extra donations! Besides, in 2014, the parish will celebrate the centenary of its being a Lithuanian Parish. We will certainly want to do some work to celebrate THAT glorious event! Watching over our church are the ever vigilant Joe Rudis, Dr. Algis Lukosevicius, and Parish Sacristan, Phil Caponegro, bless them!

Should you want to make a more generous personal donation toward building maintenance, or toward the maintenance and repairs of clerical vestments, to defray the costs of surplices and cassocks for the altar boys, or to purchase new altar linens, altar vessels, etc., contact Dr. Lukosevicius any Sunday after Mass. He can give you an idea of what is needed at present.

Lent begins Wednesday, February 13. Ashes are expected to be distributed at Annunciation during the Wednesday 7:00 PM Spanish Mass. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of strict fast and abstinence for adults, to age 59 (Abstinence only for children.). All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence for Catholics. Remember, penance, self sacrifice, prayerfulness, and generosity to the poor are what should characterize our observances of the penitential season of Lent.

Lithuanian Independence Day, February 16 (Vasario 16), will be celebrated on February 16. The Office of the Lithuanian Consul General and the Joint Committee (Tautos Fondas, ALTA, and the Lithuanian American Community) have joined together to create a unique two part celebration: On SATURDAY evening, at 7:00 PM, Valdemaras Sarapinas, Consul General of Lithuania, will open the festivities, after which there will be cultural program. The first part will feature folk dances by the New Jersey group “Viesulas”. The second part will be a Jazz Cabaret featuring saxophonist Kęstutis Vaiginis with a jazz band. Admission 20.00. For more information contact info...@tautosfondas.org

On SUNDAY, February 17, the annual Independence Day Mass will be said at Annunciation at 10:00 AM, followed by a Kavine with light refreshments, coffee, and cake.

The New York Consulate of the Republic of Lithuania invites all to a concert by the group “Skyle” on Thursday, February 21 at St. Peter’s Church, 619 Lexington Avenue, New York in celebration of the 95th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Lithuania

KAVINE NEWS: If you want to provide something special at Kavine, please contact Pat Sidas at SID...@SOL.COM so she can help you coordinate your donation. God Bless the KAVINE SET-UP AND CLEAN-UP COMMITTEE. To volunteer to help at Kavine, contact Vida Penikas or Pat Sidas. All you have to do is come half an hour early once in a while to set up the hall, or stay 15-20 minutes longer to clear the tables, fold the cloths, and “wash” the coffee and tea pots. There is SERIOUS need for a few folk to volunteer to come a few minutes early to help spread the tablecloths and cut the cakes so that Pat Sidas, who regularly opens the hall and starts the coffee, can get to Mass on time. The work is easy, and folk always have some fun. Just show up! ACIU!

Thanks to the following parishioners who generously made donations to Kavine: Renata Alinskas, Vilija Katinas W., and Vytautas Cereska, who always finds time to bring flowers! Many thanks go to Vida Jankauskas and Dr. Giedre Kumpikas, who regularly bring material to Kavine to share!

ACIU! to the NY Chapter of Ateininkiai……..Under the leadership of Dr. Milda Chakar-Palubinskas, the chapter celebrated the traditional December Festival. The chapter generously donated over $100 of the event income to Annunciation Parish!

Aciu to Msgr. Calise and the parish paid staff for a lovely Volunteer Appreciation Evening of good food, good fellowship, and good song on January 19. ACIU, Annunciation Volunteers!

Ave, Atque Vale! Hail and Farewell! Msgr. Algimantas Bartkus, retired rector of the Lithuanian Pontifical College in Rome, brother of Nijole, who most recently was in residence at St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Maspeth, has retired to Florida. Brooklyn’s loss is St. Petersburg’s gain!

From Father Yenkevich (Jankevicius), who served our parish in the 1980s: Lithuanian Short Stories is a book edited and translated by Tadas Klimas. It is available on “Amazon”. What makes it so unique is that even though it is translated into English, he keeps a strong Lithuanian tone of the original, and each story brings back memories of stories we heard from our grandparents, who experienced life in Lithuania. ACIU!

May they rest in peace… Henrikas Miklas has died in Colorado. He is survived by his sons Antanas and Gintaras and his daughter Danute. From Florida comes the sad news that longtime parishioner Jonas Mikalauskas died. He is survived by his wife Birute and sons Gediminas and Vytas. Vinny Stripeikis has died (Aciu to Helen Bagdonas for the sad news.) Stefania Sablevicius, grandmother of Dovilas and Naglis Bukauskas, died in August. The mother of Loneda Jautakas has died in Lithuania. Adele Sarkauskas was buried last month from our church.
