May 7 - ATEITININKIAI 100th Anniversary Celebration 1:45 PM, Annunciation Church and Hall

April Showers may indeed bring May flowers, but this year, April brings Easter Sunday, the great Feast of the Resurrection of the Lord…Velykos. It is the most important feast in our faith. Easter reminds us that we are Children of the Great Promise… the promise God made that he would send a savior, a redeemer, who would become Man like us, and who would offer to purchase our salvation with the human blood, sweat, and tears in the form of the God-Made Man, Jesus Christ. The Resurrection Mass will be at 7:00 AM Easter Sunday. April 24. The traditional Breakfast will follow (see below). Come and celebrate Our Lord‘s Resurrection…….and the firm and certain hope of our own salvation that it provides! Sadly, though, we will not be able to commemorate the Lord‘s Supper (Holy Thursday), the “Mass of the Presanctified”, as it was traditionally called, on Good Friday, nor will we be able to celebrate the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday) in Lithuanian. Services those days will be at 7:30 pm at Mt. Carmel parish in English.

Annunciation Parish and the Lithuanian Folk Art Institute, New York Chapter, will provide a workshop in making the traditional VERBOS on Sunday, April 10, at Kavine. Lithuanian people carry the VERBOS in the Palm Sunday procession and then often bring them to the cemetery to mark the graves of loved ones. They will be blessed Palm Sunday, and are free to parishioners.

Lithuanian Easter Egg making for adults and children will take place Sunday, April 17. Please consider donating a dozen hard boiled eggs. If YOU are an expert marguciai maker, please feel free to bring a few to show. They will go into the basket that will be given Msgr. Calise for Easter!

Did you know, our Parish Administrator has resumed writing a column for THE TABLET? He has!

HELP! Joe will need some bodies for decorating the church for Easter. Call him at 718-438-4649 .

Sunday, April 3, after 10:00 am Mass, the Brooklyn-Queens Chapter of the Lithuanian American Community will hold its Annual Meeting. Reports of the Chapter‘s committees‘ activities will be made, election of officerw will take place, and future plans will be discussed. Chapter President Vida Jankauskas says that there will be refreshments available immediately after Mass, in the hall.

Sunday, March 6 was LAY MINISTRY SUNDAY, a day set aside for parishioners to say a great big AČIU to their fellow parishioners who volunteer week in and week out for the parish. At Annunciation this March 6, parishioners attending the Kavine found a real treat awaiting in the parish Lower Hall…a surprise “MARDI GRAS” party! Rimas Kezys and his wife Kelly delivered Kugelis and Koldunai for lunch! There were hot dogs for children, and an anonymous donation of macaronis and sauce, bread, and sauerkraut to round out the meal. Thanks go to Rimas and Kelly, (and the chef at THE AVENUE restaurant!), Pat Sidas. Tracey Slizys, Matas Slizys, and Aldona Marijosius, who did the serving, and Ray Slizys, who made sure there was something to drink besides coffee! New Choir member Arthur Wilson helped clean up! What a nice surprise.

Sunday, March 20, the 20th Anniversary of Kovo 11, date of the Restoration of Lithuanian Independence, was commemorated with a gala luncheon, and a fine concert by Arvydas Vilcinskas, sponsored by the NY District Council and the local Lithuanian American Community chapters. A surprise to all was the announcement, by Consul General Valdemaras Sarapinas, of the awarding of two of Lithuania’s Independence Restoration Day Medals to Annunciation Parish Lithuanian Affairs Committee co-Chairman Raimundas Slizys, and to Committee member Pat Sidas, in recognition of their work in service to the New York Lithuanian Community and Annunciation Parish. Monsignor Calise accepted the medal on behalf of Pat Sidas, who was away that Sunday. He said very generous and kind things about Raimundas and Pat! The Consul General and Mrs. Sarapinas graciously returned to Annunciation on March 25 to join in the celebration of the parish’s titular feast, and to present the medal to Pat in person.

FRIDAY, MARCH 25, the Feast of the Annunciation, our parish’s Titular Feast, was celebrated. Monsignor Calise said evening Mass at Annunciation. A wonderful number of Lithuanian speaking and Spanish speaking people, as well as Italian speakers from Mt. Carmel, came. Stations of The Cross in Spanish took place at 6:30 pm, and in Italian at 7:00 pm. At Monsignor’s request, both the Lithuanian and Spanish Choirs sang, and a member of Annunciation Lithuanian Choir chanted both the PATER NOSTER and the MAGNIFICAT in Latin, symbolic of the Unity of Holy Mother, the Church. Astra Butkus sang the words of the Angel Gabriel when she sang Schubert’s Ave, Maria at the Meditation. Simas and Rimas Chakar-Palubinskas, Denise Garcia, Jonas Lukosevicius, Martin Pietrusiewicz, Matas Slizys, and Susana Tlapanco served as acolytes.

After Mass, everyone adjourned to the Parish Hall for coffee and cake. Baked goods honored all the ethnic traditions that have called Annunciation home. Thanks go to Vida Jankauskas for providing “ausytes”, aguonis (poppyseed cake), and babka to represent the Lithuanian tradition, to Pat Sidas for providing cookies and brownies, in the American tradition, and “stollen” and “kipflern” representing the German tradition, and Leticia Serrano, for providing two HUGE, wonderfully delicious cakes, representing the Latin American tradition. An anonymous donor provided daffodils for the tables and Italian cookies to honor the Italian tradition.

Others who must be thanked for making the evening special are, ALL THE CHOIR MEMBERS, who came to sing, Ray Slizys, who produced the beautiful Mass booklet we all used to follow the Mass, Paulius Sabalis and Margarita Duran, lectors, Antonio Arenas, who led the Spanish Choir and chanted the Responsorial Psalm, Asta Barkauskas, who, unable to be present herself, arranged for Loneda and Arturas Jautakas to provide the choir direction and organ music, and organized the Lithuanian music for the Mass. Thanks also go to Coffee Hour Committee members Pat Sidas, Tracey Slizys, Lidia Santos and her granddaughter, Leticia Serrano and her husband, Aukse and Robert Edwards, Arthur Wilson, Mara Vygantas, Monika Sabalis, and Ramute Zukas for organizing everything, including the clean-up!

REJOICE! He’s a BOY! Tristan Heery was born March 26 to Sean and Christina (Senken) Heery. Loving Grandmother is Josephina Senken. Tristan has a brother, Sean and sister, Karolina!
