JULY— and more than half of the YEAR OF THE FAITH has passed… We can all do SOMETHING to strengthen our own Faith, and that of others who share the “One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Faith that comes to us from the Apostles…” In his Papal “Exhortation” to the Lithuanian Youth taking part in YOUTH DAYS, Pope Francis writes:

The encounter with the love of God in the friendship of Christ is possible first of all in the Sacraments, in particular the Eucharist and Reconciliation. In the Holy Mass we celebrate the memorial of the Lord’s sacrifice, His giving himself totally for our salvation: again today He really gives His Body and sheds His Blood to redeem the sins of humanity and make us enter into communion with Him. Jesus receives us with all of our limitations, He bring us the mercy of the Father who forgives us, and transforms our heart, rendering it a new heart, capable of loving Him, who loved His own to the end (cf. John 13:1). And this love is manifested in his mercy. Jesus always forgives us. THINK ABOUT IT. (Thanks to Msgr. Calise, who sent the text on to Pat!)

More good news about Sister Nicodema Park, is a “pocket park” dedicated to an extraordinary Dominican Sister who served our parish and parish school for many years. The City will install a small bench there! The bench will be carefully constructed so as not to invite loitering or sleeping!

Good news about our church interior! The gifted artist Ruta Mockute, with the help of Dr. Algirdas Lukosevicius, Parish Sexton Phil Caponegro, and Facilities Manager Richard Catalanotti, has repaired the nasty damage a water leak did quite a few years ago to the decorative fresco work around the door to the “left” sacristy! NO MORE UGLY WHITE PATCH! ACIU, Ruta!

Sick call list: Elvira Vilineskis, Phyllis Macenas, Liuda Gudelis, and Joe Levonas, and are suffering the assaults of age. Antanas Vytuvis and Regina Gelzinis also need prayers, as does Helen Bagdonas.

Annunciation Parish feted Father Volertas on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of his ordination on Sunday, June 23. Parishioners joined Father at a buffet luncheon, complete with sheet cake adorned with a BIG 2-0 set of candles. The Kungys family donated additional cakes, and the champagne with which all present drank to his health. Lithuanian Affairs Committee leader Vida Jankauskas and Dr. Giedre Kumpikas gave speeches of thanks, and noted Father’s service to the Lithuanians of Annunciation, Transfiguration, and Riverhead over the past 15 years. Big ACIU to Tracey and Raimundas Slizys, Josephina Senken, Bill Kumet, Ramute Hopanus, and Pat Sidas, who prepared the food and decorated the hall. Aciu, Father Volertas!

On the same day, the good folk at Mt. Carmel Parish celebrated the Silver Anniversary of the ordination of Father Michael Lynch, who occasionally says the 11:30 AM Mass, and who assists in coordinating joint liturgical celebrations at Annunciation. He was presented with a simply carved Lithuanian way Cross and green juosta (ceremonial belt) by the Lithuanian delegation (Dr. Giedre Kimpikas, Dr. Algirdas Lukosevicius, Raimundas Slizys and Pat Sidas) and a “wood burned” image of Our Lady of Guadeloupe by the Spanish delegation ( Mrs.Arenas. Mrs Arrango, Ms. Duran, and Mr. and Mrs. Rendon).

News from the Lithuanian Bishop’s Conference: The Holy Father, Francis, has elevated Father Lionginas Virbalas, SJ, to the Episcopate, naming him Bishop of Panevezys, succeeding Bishop Jonas Kauneckas, who recently resigned his office. The Good Lord Bless and keep them both!

May they rest in Peace… Our parish was stunned by the sudden death of Algirdas Jankauskas, beloved husband of Vida, father of Aukse, Nina, Laima, Jonas, and Gina, and brother to Irena and Zina. Many thanks go to Rev. Danielius Staniskis, who found his way through a 60 minute delay at the Lincoln Tunnel to arrive at our church in time to concelebrate AtA  Algis’ funeral Mass. The death of Nastute Umbrasaite was recently revealed. Funeral arrangements for Nastute are pending. Please contact Laima Sikeikyte-Hood (ljh...@verizon.net).

A big Annunciation ACIU goes to Grazina Janusas, who graciously has produced the last two parish bulletins in the absence of editor Vida Jankauskas.

He’s a BOY! Jonas Nevery Lamb was born to Lina and Brian Lamb late last month. Jonas has a sister, Maria, Mociute Vida Penikas (also a backup BULLETIN editor! ACIU!), and Senelis Aldis. St. Peter’s Parish, Boston, grows!

He’s a BOY! Rejoice with Maryte Kumet! Her daughter Diana has given birth in Lithuania to a SON! His dad is Vytas; he has an older brother, 13, and a step-grandfather in the US, our own Bill Kumet!

MORE HAPPY NEWS! Ausra Kregzdyte Cunningham and her husband Dennis announce the marriage of their son Dennis July 6! The Pittsburgh Lithuanian American Community grows!

Annunciation is proud of… Shannon Curran, daughter of ZINIOS readers Loretta Milukaite and Joe Curran, who graduated as VALEDICTORIAN of her class at Holy Child School, Shannon, already an accomplished singer, will attend The Mary Louis Academy in the fall!

Annunciation’s Religious Education Program, is alive and well, and waiting for families to register their children for future Confirmation classes and First Holy Communion. To enroll your child or grandchild (English-only children are also welcome!) in future classes contact mild...@yahoo.com

GREAT NEWS! The New York Adult Chapter of ATEITIS has reorganized itself! Ateitis Week is scheduled 8/3-8/10 at the Franciscan Guest House in Kennebunkport, Maine. The chaplain is Father Aurelijus Gricius, OFM. Lithuanian Mass will be at noon on Sunday and 8 AM Monday – Friday. We encourage Annunciation choir members to come! If there are at least 3 choir members to lead the singing of Lithuanian hymns during the Mass, Chris Staknys has agreed to accompany them on the organ. There will be three musical events, and three very interesting speakers. For more information please contact Monika Sabalis at M.Vy...@att.net or Dalia Dzikas at Dzi...@comcast.net. For room availability please call the guest house at (207) 967-4865 or I...@FRANCISCANGUESTHOUSE.COM.

Eighty long years ago, a couple of Lithuanian American pilots from Chicago, Darius and Girenas, packed up a mail pouch of the United States Mail destined for Lithuania, and the hopes and pride of Lithuanians on both sides of the Atlantic into their small airplane, and took off from Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn, for Kaunas… only the 5th attempt to fly the stormy, cold, and grey Atlantic Ocean nonstop. Having conquered that ocean, they were so near their destination when the little plane crashed, killing both men.

The New York Lithuanian Consulate, along with the New York City and Eastern Long Island Chapters of the Lithuanian American Community, will commemorate this historic anniversary on July 14. At 9:30 AM people are asked to assemble at the Darius and Girenas Monument, at Union Avenue and South Second Street, Williamsburg, where a short ceremony will take place. At 10:00 AM, the Mass at Annunciation will be celebrated for the repose of the souls of these Lithuanian Heroes. Following Mass there will be a light breakfast, prepared by the New York LB Chapter. At 12:30, a bus, arranged for by the Consulate, will transport attendees to Floyd Bennett Field, where ceremonies will begin at 2:00 PM. Special guest, Lithuanian Opera star Laima Janutyte, will sing the American and Lithuanian National Anthems, and Consul General Sarapinas will conduct the ceremonial presentations. Refreshments will follow. The bus will return to Annunciation Church at the conclusion of the event. (For those planning to drive, the formal address for Floyd Bennett Field “terminal”, where the event will take place is 50 Aviation Road, Brooklyn.) For more information, contact Rasa Sprindys at vilkau72@yahoo.de . Brief description of the event is available at our website:  http://www.nyapreiskimo.com/?p=1406  , photos: http://www.nyapreiskimo.com/Photos/NYC-Dariaus-ir-Gireno-skrydzio-80-mecio-minejimas-2013m-liepos-14d/  .

KAVINE NEWS: There is SERIOUS need for a few folk to volunteer to come a few minutes early to help spread the tablecloths and cut the cakes so that Pat Sidas, who regularly opens the hall and starts the coffee, can get to Mass on time. The work is easy, and folk always have fun. Just show up! ACIU! If you want to provide something special at Kavine, please contact Pat Sidas at SID...@SOL.COM so she can help you coordinate your donation. God Bless the KAVINE SET-UP AND CLEAN-UP COMMITTEE. To volunteer to help at Kavine, contact Vida Penikas or Pat Sidas. All you have to do is come half an hour early once in a while to set up the hall, or stay 15-20 minutes longer to clear the tables, fold the cloths, and “wash” the coffee and tea pots. Thanks to TWO anonymous cash donors! Donations also have come from the Sileikis family, who provided an elegant breakfast after the Mass for their dear mother, Valerija. Albina Zumbakis regularly brings something delicious to share! ACIU!

EVERY donation is a valuable one to both Bishop DiMarzio and Annunciation. FEWER THAN 50 of us gave last year. That won’t DO! Please look for the envelopes in the church and hall, and do your part to support Annunciation AND Bishop DiMarzio and his work for the people of our Diocese of Brooklyn!
